Today the first of two cases arrived so I was able to complete the assembly of the first server. I installed Solaris 10 off the cds and when it got to the end it asked for the Java Enterprise System CD #1. When I as downloading the cds, the Java software were separate .tar.gz files, not ISO images. I'm a bit confused. I could have bought a box set with 8 DVDs for $30.
So I skipped that step and have just the base OS installed. I have an old ATI Rage II+DVD video card installed and by default things loaded up in 640x480. Reading on google I found out I can use kdmconfig to tell it if it should use x.org or xsun for display. That program told me to run xorgconfig. That program let me change the resolution. My next problem is my network interface doesn't seem to be detected or installed. Everything in Solaris is different compared to Linux, so I'm a complete newbie.
So it looks like I'll probably be a couple weeks before I have everything set up the way I want. How typical :/ I should have expected that anyway. I'm still waiting on the second case so I can build the other server and get Solaris on there too.
What's neat is Gnome is installed (called Java Desktop System) and the theme they use is really cool looking. The "start button" is the Java logo.
