Each chapter is around 80 pages and gets into the nitty gritty details about everything. I couldn't believe the amount of detail explained in chapter 1. It was almost overwhelming but since I already know Java (to an extent) and have been programming for many many years I think I'll be fine. I just have to make sure to do all the quizes, exercises, and 2 minute drills several times, then do practice exams for a while (you pay for that) before taking the real exam. I'm 150 pages into the 800 page book now. I think I'll be doing the exam sometime in November.
I'm now thinking this SCJP exam study guide book is a better book to read than O'Reilly's Java in a nutshell book. The nutshell book is very thick, but 300 pages of it are on the Java language. The rest is an API reference. I thought it was quite thorough when I read it but they couldn't have been as thorough as SCJP (300 pages vs 800 pages).
