War stories

Last night I went to Adrian's house for a BBQ and to watch the UFC on pay per view. There were about 8 of us. It was fun, and really nice sitting on his deck in nice weather, looking at the lake. He bought the house from his grandparents and is now beginning renovations. His grandparents live in the house behind them.

When I arrived, I was a bit early so stopped at his grandparents house to use the phone. Adrian said he'd be about 20 minutes. I started talking with his grandparents. They are really nice people. Grandma is from Holland, and the Grandpa is Canadian. He was telling me that he was in the 2nd world war and was one of the engineers. He said he built the first landing strip in England for B52 bombers to land on, built bridges, used explosives to destroy roads, etc... After the war he went to work for Avril -- the Canadian company that made the Arrow. He was one of the engineers working on the Arrow. It was the most advanced fighter jet in the world, over 25 years more advanced than anything the Americans had. The Americans had them shut down and destroyed all of their aircraft. He said even today, there is no aircraft as technologically advanced as this one. Some might go faster, or have computers on board but there were many other things this jet did. He didn't go into detail. He said there are some models that were used for air tunnel testing sunken in Lake Ontario (but noone knows where), and there is one fully functional one hidden somewhere else. I didn't ask if he knew where.

He said they invented the titanium pieces inside a jet engine that spin in opposite directions all the way through the engine (which all jets use now), and that the jet engines General Electric sell is the exact engine they designed. He also said that they were working on flying sauces and they worked. There was a 16ft and 22ft model and they had huge 4" thick cables all around it to hold them down. They were jet powered.

He lent me a movie about the Avril Arrow on VHS. I'm going to watch it tonight. Very interesting.
